In August 2013, fans of the game Dota 2 from the community on the social resource reddit were invited to tour the Valve office pictures of employees' workplaces were taken, on one of the screens there was a page of the internal network of employees of the company with the mention of the words "Source 2" and "Left 4 Dead 3". At that time, active work was already underway on the "Valve Computer" - a series of Steam Machines gaming computers controlled by the SteamOS operating system. In November 2012, company founder Gabe Newell announced that the company was developing a new engine. The first information about the engine began to seep into the Web even before the official announcement: for example, in 2012, when browsing the files of Source Filmmaker, Valve's tool for creating cinematic videos on the first Source engine, players found a file mentioning the name "Source 2" (the file could have ended up in build of the toolkit due to the fact that the company was simultaneously working on supporting the new engine with the toolkit) later, several more references to the engine name were found in Valve's product files, which were then removed by the developers.
